23-year-old man drowns in Lake Jenks in the San Bernardino Mountains – San Bernardino Sun

A 23-year-old man from Mexico drowned at Jenks Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains on Sunday, July 24, sheriff’s officials said.

At 1:07 p.m., San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputies responded to a drowning call at the lake, east of Angeles Oaks, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

It was later learned that the victim found an old jet ski on the shore and attempted to use it as a canoe, the sheriff’s department said.

The victim struggled before going underwater and did not resurface, authorities said. A witness attempted to swim to help the victim, but also began to struggle and was pulled from the water and treated at Bear Valley Hospital, the sheriff’s department said.

Deputies and officers from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife arrived and began searching for the victim, but were unable to locate him, sheriff’s officials said. Water conditions were heavy with weeds and grass, making swimming difficult, authorities said.

A dive team with the sheriff’s department responded to the scene and continued the search, officials said. At 6:07 p.m., the victim’s body was found and recovered from the lake, along with the makeshift boat, authorities said.

The identity of the victim was not immediately available.

The hospitalized victim was later released after being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.
