Help find new creatures!

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) — The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and its nonprofit science research partner, Discover Life in America, need the public’s help with their Smokies Most Wanted program. The initiative allows visitors to help preserve species in the park by recording sightings on their smartphones using the iNaturalist application.

Smokies Most Wanted encourages visitors to document any organisms they encounter while exploring the Smokies. Discover Life in America uses the data to record new park species, detect invasive species, and learn about understudied or rare species.

Smokies Most Wanted is an extension of the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory, the non-profit organization’s ongoing project to catalog all life in the Smokies.

More information about the Smokies Most Wanted project can be found on the Discover Life in America website at dlia.org/smokiesmostwanted.

Kim Roney, Michael Hayes and Dr. Cliff Feingold challenge Esther Manheimer in the race for mayor of Asheville.

3 candidates aim to dethrone Esther Manheimer in Asheville mayoral race

WLOS, Hannah Mackenzie, 03/03/2022

Three candidates face incumbent Esther Manheimer, who has held the position since 2013.

Mannheimer: We’ve seen homelessness increase in this city and in cities across the country during COVID, and every city needs to deal with it as best they can. I think we’ve tried to pivot and figure that out by working with the police department, trying to enforce the no camping while providing shelter to those we can.

Question: With the back and forth with the Ramada situation, the cleaning up of homeless camps, complaints about litter downtown, many say it’s just not happening fast enough. What is a remedy?

Mannheimer: I share their frustration. I don’t think it’s going fast enough. The city, like any other employer, is understaffed. Trying to find contractors to do all the work is a challenge.

Dr. Cliff Feingold runs against Manheimer. He said he was doing it to bring a conservative voice to the front lines.

“It’s been a while since a Republican or a Conservative ran for mayor or mayor. It’s been many years,” Feingold said. “With the liberal mindset of the council now, and everyone is voting for liberal agenda items and no one is even thinking of voting for conservative items.”

Michael Hayes is also running for the seat of mayor. According to Hayes, he plans to use his personal experience to bring about change.

“I’ve been in recovery, I’ve been homeless, I’ve been incarcerated,” Hayes said. “I’ve been all those things that can prevent people from getting affordable housing or just finding a place to live.”

Thursday afternoon, Kim Roney tweeted a photo of herself to make it official. The Asheville City Council member is also running for mayor. News 13 asked for comment. Roney said she would release a statement after the filing closes on Friday.

Trump-appointed judge ends efforts to block Madison Cawthorn from NC ballot

Raw story, Sky Palma, ¾/2022

An effort to block U.S. Representative Madison Cawthorn from voting in North Carolina this year was blocked by a federal judge on Friday, WRAL reports.

The challenge was filed by lawyers who say Cawthorn is an insurgent who should be legally excluded from the ballot because of his involvement in the events leading up to the riot at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The lawyers behind the legal effort cited the 14th Amendment, which reads: “No person shall be a senator or representative in Congress, or an elector of the president and vice president, or hold any office, civil or military, in the United States, or under any state, who, after taking the oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any legislature of State, or as an executive or judicial officer of a State, in support of the Constitution of the United States, has engaged in insurrection or rebellion against them, or has aided or comforted their enemies. But Congress can, by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove this incapacity.

GOP’s Madison Cawthorn hit with new challenges for voters

Raw Story, Sky Palma, 03/03/2022

Cawthorn “must be held accountable for his actions that threatened our democracy,” said Raleigh attorney John Wallace, according to the Associated Press. “Wisely, the Constitution provides a remedy for our protection. We are asking here for the imposition of this recourse.

According to the two voters, Cawthorn is ineligible for re-election because he violated part of a post-Civil War amendment to the Constitution regarding insurgencies due to his attendance at the rally that preceded the riot in US Capitol on January 17. 6th January 2021. Cawthorn addressed the crowd at the January 6 rally and voted against certifying Democrat Joe Biden’s presidential victory.

As WRAL points out, the challenge is essentially the same as the one filed against Cawthorn in January, “but that one was deemed irrelevant after a court-ordered redistricting process reworked North Carolina’s congressional districts, moving the boundaries of the district that Cawthorn originally filed to run.
