Bombay: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) plans to literally write India’s history in stone. The idea is to honor some prominent heroes of India by carving their sculptures into the rocks across the mountain ranges of the state.
The project is inspired by Mount Rushmore in the United States, where massive rock sculptures of four US presidents, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, are set in a mountain range in the state of South Dakota .

The aim of the project is to showcase India’s glorious history and build a memorial to the nation’s brave warriors and eminent leaders, with special attention to personalities from Maharashtra. Tourist sites in the mountainous regions of the state will also complement these sculptures.

A tender for a consultant to conduct a feasibility study and develop an elaborate master plan has been launched. The consultant must also identify the places where these sculptures can appear.

The MSRDC-appointed consultant will also propose an optimal structure for the proposed projects and assess a reasonable financial option after considering various models, such as public-private partnership, donor investment, and pure private investment, among others.

As per the current plan, the MSRDC will start by identifying suitable locations keeping in mind the history, culture and heritage of Maharashtra. Once the location is finalized, the carving will begin. At the same time, the agency will also build tourist sites around the proposed sculptures.
