The sudden explosion surprised many local residents on Saturday, forcing thousands to flee.
Mount Semeru, the largest mountain on the island of Java, threw ash and hot gases 12,000 meters away, causing panicked people to flee. Lava and other volcanic material flowed down the mountain sides, destroying homes and infrastructure.
In an enthralling video, apparently filmed with a cell phone, a huge eruption cloud can be seen approaching, people fleeing.
In some places, a thick cloud of smoke covered all the sunlight and plunged the communities into darkness.
– Suddenly everything got dark, a bright afternoon turned into night. A roar was heard and the heat forced us to flee towards the mosque, says Fatima, from the Korah Kubokan community located five kilometers from the crater.
The national disaster management authority BNPB said at least 13 people have died from the outbreak. At least 98 people were reportedly injured.
Ten miners trapped during the eruption of the volcano were rescued, according to the BNPB.
Airlines have been urged to avoid overflying the affected area.
